Biography
Markádam - (pronounced : mar-kay-dum)
Life
is a celebration of diversity and exploration, why should music any different?
Any one who has every listen to a Markádam CD, or even better, has
caught a live show knows this is a philosophy he incorporates in his musical
compositions. From his debut album A Long Time Coming to his
upcoming release Fortune Teller Markádam has evolved
as a singer-songwriter through the years, invoking artists of the past while
weaving a new musical fusion of his own, he has managed to create a unique blend
of song and music. Songs an arrangements that are familiar, yet diverse an
odd enough to maintain your interest, provide him with the
uncanny ability to keep you hanging on to hear what may be next. With each
song, each performance, each album, he keeps you guessing what will be next.
Often referred to as a musical rubix cube, Markádam has made an art form
out of being musically confused. Providing the listener with a brief
presentation of his past, present and future all via the every so lovely method
of music.
Since his 1998 debut single, "Carefree World," the Carolina native has racked up his share of success, both on radio and with critics. He's scored 2 college/NPR radio hits with his debut CD (including "Lay Down My Mind") and earned nominations from INDIE artist network and the Carolina Arts Centré. Markádam has appeared on the same bill as The Kinleys, EmmyLou Harris, Nickel Creek and Roseanne Cash. Still, Mark has always taken a maverick approach to his career and his music, never yielding to the "do it the safe way" philosophy of some Music City execs.
Instead,
Markádam has steadfastly set his own pace, following his own artistic vision
and finding his own place in the independent music echelon. "I just do
what I feel, I follow my spirit and it leads me where I need to be",
Mark states as his approach to life. The result of heeding his intution?
"Life is great, life is a wonder (pun intended)," the
singer-songwriter declares. Co-founding WindStar Entertainment Group
in early 1998 is one of the keys to his current contentment. "Once in a
while, the stars line up, and when they do, you can feel it," he remarks.
The album finds Markádam in a whimsical form, combining pop-rock with folk-soul and gospel, the tracks provide music from his soul. All written by Mark, they provide the soundtrack to his desires, dreams and future. "I write what I know and I know what I write. People tend to get to wrapped up in trying to be the best, or better than everyone else. I'm just me and this is what I do, this is what I have to contribute and it's mine."
Lyrically, Mark encompasses diverse themes, from the uncertainty of faltering life to the dependability of familiar love.
Musically, Mark is often cited for his unconventional musical structures; his melodies frequently take on an unprecedented sense of passion. "I'm in the writing mode all the time," Mark states. "I don’t just sit and wait on inspiration, it usually just comes. If it's slow, I don’t write it, usually the song just flows out."
As Mark's career indicates, he walks it like he talks it. From Along Time Coming (his debut album ) to Fortune Teller he's followed his own road, allowing his music to evolve naturally while making sure each project is creatively refreshing, combining traditional sentiments with modern accents. "I've been fortunate to have a lot of artistic freedom doing what I do," he says. "I want people to know that I'm gonna give 'em something just a little bit different -and pray they like it." - J.Nelson
